St. Michael's School for the Hearing Impaired, Hazaribag


St. Michael school was established in 1995 by Sisters of the Mercy of the Holy Cross, Hazaribag. Presently the strength of the school is 185, from nursery to Class 10, with16 teaching and 8 non- teaching staff. It includes boys and girls from Bihar and JharkhandStates. The sisters run a hostel for both boys and girls, presently there are 110 hostlers. The sisters main concern is the holistic development of these children. The greatest strength of the school is its dedicated team of professionals. They are keen to use multidisciplnary approach (oral, sign language gestures, lip read).

Vision and Mission of the School:


Vision: Children with disabilities especially the Deaf to participate as equals in the lives of their families and to become active members of the society.

Mission: To open the world to the Children and the youngsters with disabilities, to enable them to face the future challenges of life and to equip them to become a full pledged member of their communities. These aims are actualized through education that promotes cognitive development and social rehabilitation.

Aims & Objectives of St. Michael's School:


  • The main aim of St. Michael's School is to develop self-esteem and independency in differently able children. It is inter-linked with school's wide range of curricular and co-curricular activities.
  • "Value and self-esteem is the right of every person." Taking this into consideration, the school promotes these students to live with dignity and to receive education and support which enables them to acheive their full pontentials at home, in school and in their subsequent careers.

So far 48 students have successfully completed Secondary Examination in five batches from National Institution of Open School (NIOS). Some of them have completed Hotel management courses and are placed in big Hotels. Some are doing higher education from regular colleges, 3 have joined as staff in our school.

Apart from academic studies children are exposed to co-curricular activities for their all round development. Equal opportunities are given in various competitions with hearing children as well as Children with Disabilities. Thus our main mission is 'to enable the differently able to be able'.
